MichaelGartenberg,atechstrategistwithInterpret,saidApplelikelyleftthecameraoutoftheiPodTouchtocreate“segmentation”oftheproducts.ThismovewouldmakeconsumersdesirebothaniPodTouchandaniPodNano,hesaid.

However,iFixIt’sobservationssuggestthatApplemayhaveleftthecameraoutoftheiPodTouchbecauseitwastechnicallytoodifficulttoinstall.Priortotheevent,arumorreportalsosaidiPodswithcamerasmightseeadelaybecauseoftechnicalissues.Thisengineeringchallengemayhavebeentheproblemdelayingacamera-equippediPodTouch.ThatmeansaniPodTouchwithacameracouldbeontheroadmap,andApple’sengineersareprobablydevisingawaytocramthatcamerainside.

Anotherquestionthatarosefromyesterday’siPodeventwaswhytheiPodNanocanonlycapturevideobutnotstillimages.iFixItperformedateardownoftheiPodNanoanddiscovereditslow-resolutionVGAcameraisonly2.75mm;theiPodNanois6.2mmthick.TheiPhone’s6mmcamera,whichmustalsoaccountforarubbermount,isthickerthantheentireiPodNano.Inshort,thelow-resolution(640-by-480)VGAcamera—withnofocusingcapability—wouldproducepoor-qualitystillshots,whichislikelywhyAppleoptedtoleaveastill-shotfunctionout.
